BATTLE OF PASSCHENDAELE CENTENARY - JULY 2017

On 31st July 2017, Terry's Tours were present In Ypres to commemorate the Centenary of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, known as the Battle of Passchendaele. On the eve of the Centenary we gathered in the presence of the Belgian Royal Family and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) and witnessed an incredible sound and light show that was reflected onto the Cloth Hall in the Grote Market. On the following day, we were present at the official ceremony at Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth Graves Commission cemetery in the world.

A 4 minute video of the commemoration is available through this link:

During this tour, I guided the relatives of Private 242713 William House, 1/5th Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry who was killed on 9th October 1917 during the battle. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial. We visited the very location on the battlefield where William was killed and then found an unknown grave of one of KOYLI's in Poelcappelle British Cemetery. There are over 6,000 unidentified burials in this cemetery, and one of them could be William, perhaps even the one we visited:
